Theatre Show Súper Chefs is a Recipe for Fun and Life Lessons – Exclusive Interview with Juan Galeano
Get ready to spice things up with Súper Chefs! In this interactive cooking theatre show, both children and adults are in for a treat as they embark on a culinary adventure filled with music, laughter, and a dash of education. We sat down with Juan Galeano, who stars as 6-year-old Manny, the lead character, determined to cook up a heartwarming family meal while navigating the ups and downs of life. Juan gives us a sneak peek into the world of Súper Chefs - a show that’s as much about traditional and delicious food as it is about family, teamwork, and breaking down gender stereotypes. From his favourite dish to turning the theatre into a dancefloor, here’s what Juan had to say about bringing this vibrant Latin American family story to life…
Tell us about Súper Chefs – what can audiences expect?
Audiences can expect a vibrant mix of fun, salsa, and guacamole! Súper Chefs immerses viewers in the daily life of a Latin American family living in London, delivering a heartwarming message about pursuing your dreams with perseverance, asking for help, and owning up to mistakes. It's a family-friendly show with catchy songs that emphasize the importance of togetherness and resilience, making it a delightful experience for all ages.
How does the audience participation change the dynamics of the show?
Audience participation takes Súper Chefs to a whole new level. We have several moments where we directly engage with the crowd, feeding off their energy and responses, which makes every performance unique. The theatre becomes a lively dance floor when we teach the audience our songs and dance moves, and it's always a thrill to see everyone standing up, moving, and having fun. Their involvement truly makes the show more immersive and joyful.
What’s your personal favourite Latin American dish, and have you ever tried making it yourself?
As a Colombian, I’d have to say “Bandeja Paisa” is my all-time favourite. This hearty dish includes green beans, rice, plantain, chorizo, arepas, mince, egg, avocado, and my favourite—chicharrón (pork crackling). Traditionally, it’s served with Yorkshire pudding, but I'm not a fan, so I skip that part. While I’ve attempted to make it myself, the chicharrón remains a challenge—I've yet to perfect it! Every time I visit Colombia, I make sure to enjoy an authentic version in a good restaurant.
Can you tell us more about how the show challenges outdated stereotypes?
This is one of my favourite aspects of the show! Throughout Súper Chefs, we teach kids the importance of helping in the kitchen, regardless of gender. We tackle outdated ideas, such as “boys play outside and girls cook in the kitchen,” head-on. We emphasise that domestic tasks are for everyone, and as we say in the show, “All children can help in the kitchen.” It’s a powerful message about equality and the value of teamwork, challenging old stereotypes and showing that everyone, no matter their gender, can be involved in every aspect of life.
What journey does Manny go on throughout the show?
Manny’s main goal in Súper Chefs is to prepare a special welcome-home dinner for his dad, Tonny. However, he faces a few challenges along the way. He learns valuable lessons, like asking for help when needed and listening to his mum. Through the ups and downs, Manny comes to realise that he can be anything he wants if he works hard and remains open to learning. In the end, with the support of his family, he succeeds in creating the perfect meal for his dad.
What do you hope the kids in the crowd take away from the show?
The key messages I hope kids take away from Súper Chefs are “Ask for help when you need it” and “You can be anything if you stay strong and mighty!” These messages encourage children to pursue their dreams and seek support along the way. It's about building resilience and understanding that no one has to go through life's challenges alone.
Súper Chefs adheres to the national curriculum. What has the reaction been like from schools so far?
The response from schools has been fantastic! Both kids and teachers love the show because it reinforces important values like staying true to yourself, chasing your dreams, and apologising when you make mistakes. The show also tackles the topic of gender roles, reminding children that they can be anything, regardless of their gender, nationality, or background. It’s heartwarming to see how well-received these messages are by both students and educators alike.
