How Do Anti-Wrinkle Injections Work?

The most common way to prevent and remove unwanted fine lines and wrinkles these days is to have anti-wrinkle treatments or botox injections, but how do these anti wrinkle injections London work?

Wrinkles

Botox

The full name of the product used is Botulinum Toxin A; this is a neurotoxin that atrophies or temporarily paralyses the muscles that it is injected into by blocking certain signals from the nerves to the muscles so that they cannot contract.

Each muscle of the face has a role as either a “pull down” muscle or a “lift up” muscle so when injecting botox into these muscles it must be done by a fully qualified practitioner who knows what they are doing and knows which muscles are which and what their jobs are.

The Treatment

During the botox treatment, a trained and qualified professional will give the client the injections using a fine needle, before this the skin may be numbed with a topical numbing cream to minimise any pain or discomfort, this isn’t always offered though. The procedure itself is pretty quick and normally fairly painless, with most clients only experiencing mild discomfort or a slight pinching or scratching sensation.

After the injections, it takes some time for the anti wrinkle injections to take effect. Generally, clients begin to notice improvements and changes within a few days, with full results being seen within one to two weeks. The effects of anti-wrinkle injections usually last three to six months, after this, the muscles gradually begin to regain their ability to contract, and wrinkles may begin to reappear again.

The Benefits

One of the main benefits of anti-wrinkle injections, and why they are such a popular choice, is their ability to provide natural-looking results with minimal downtime, unlike surgical procedures, such as facelifts, which require extensive recovery time and are a lot more expensive, anti-wrinkle injections allow clients to resume their normal activities immediately after treatment. Some clients may experience some mild redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection sites, but these side effects are usually temporary and resolve on their own within a few days. The risk of these side effects can also be reduced by preparing for the treatment by not drinking alcohol or caffeine for 48 hours before the appointment and staying fully hydrated with water.

Reduction not Prevention

It's important to know that while anti-wrinkle injections can effectively reduce the appearance of existing wrinkles, they do not prevent new wrinkles from forming so to maintain optimal results, clients may need to undergo regular treatments every three to six months to keep their results and keep their skin looking youthful and smooth.

Although it’s important to know how botox works it’s even more important to always make sure that the practitioner administering the treatment is fully qualified, insured and trained in first aid and complications and that a prescriber has performed the consultation and prescribed the botox. Most practitioners will be happy to show their certificates and insurance upon request to put their clients at ease and show that they are licensed aestheticians with their client's best interests at heart.
