How to prepare for a winter getaway in your motorhome

Are you hoping to head away for a holiday on four wheels this season? Before you hit the road, take steps to prepare for a winter getaway in your motorhome to ensure a seamless trip and a warm, cosy stay.

Do a maintenance check

Before you hit the road, do a maintenance check on your motorhome. This should be a comprehensive assessment organised through a licenced garage with qualified mechanics.

They will make sure that your fluid levels are topped up, check for any mechanical or electrical failures, and ensure vehicle safety by looking at the brakes, tyres, clutch, and engine.

While this maintenance check will help to prevent any problems while you’re away, it’s still worth taking out relevant motorhome insurance to ensure you’re covered should you encounter any issues.

Bring cold weather equipment

As we know all too well, winter weather can be challenging for drivers – especially in large vehicles such as motorhomes. Make sure to bring cold weather equipment to aid driving in frost and snow.

In some countries this kind of equipment is a legal requirement, so be sure to check ahead of departure. For example, winter tyres and snow chains must be used in some areas of Europe.

Other useful additions to an in-vehicle winter kit include an ice scraper and de-icer, torch and shovel. You should also consider taking a warning triangle and high-visibility clothing as an extra precaution.

Invest in warm clothing and food

It goes without saying that you’ll want to stay warm while you’re in cold climates: nothing ruins a winter getaway like feeling uncomfortably cold. Invest in warm clothing and food for your trip.

When planning your meals, keep your motorhome facilities front of mind and keep things simple. Pre-made food such as soup and stews can be easily heated up, and don’t forget the kettle for hot drinks!

You might not have much room for luggage, but make sure to add the essentials to your wardrobe. This includes a winter-weight coat, scarf, hat and gloves, thermals and socks, and items you can layer.

Make your interiors cosy

Doubtless, your winter getaway in your motorhome will include daily trips to astonishing destinations where you’ll be exploring on foot or even sliding through the snow on skis. Having a warm and cosy space to return to each evening will be blissful and enhance your enjoyment of the holiday.

At the beginning of your trip, double-check your insulation and heating and look for any leaks. Otherwise keeping the interiors warm and dry will be a challenge, especially if the weather outside is frightful.

In the leisure area, add cushions and blankets to create a cosy atmosphere, maximise comfort and provide extra warmth.
