Plant a tree for the Jubilee in Ajman

HM Queen Elizabeth II is asking people from the UK to plant a tree for her Diamond Jubilee in 2022 under the Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) initiative. Why not go one step further and do it in Ajman! Only 30 Minutes from Dubai International Airport, Ajman is the UAE’s smallest state and a great place for a holiday.

You may be surprised to know that Ajman is home to the Al Zorah Nature Reserve. This is an invigorating green space experience, in an inland creek that extends over 2 square kilometres of biologically and ecologically rich wetland. Home to the fish nursery of the coast, the creek and mangrove are designated conservation areas. A large variety of rare or migratory bird species, including large flocks of resident flamingos, can be found in various parts of Al Zorah.

In accordance with the UAE government's approach to preserving the environment and protecting the country's climate for the future, Khalifa Empowerment Program - Aqdar is launching an initiative to plant 50,000 mangrove trees this year as part of the UAE 50th anniversary.

The initiative is a voluntary community activity that includes various activities with the aim of enhancing the positive contribution to improving the climate environment of the United Arab Emirates over the next 50 years towards the centenary of 2071.

Mangroves are the only evergreen forest in the Gulf and have a unique ability to survive in this habitat.

One of the major benefits of mangroves is their ability to reduce the harmful greenhouse gases which cause climate change (as they are able to sequester and remove up to 5 times more carbon from the atmosphere compared to other types of tree). Mangrove trees are one of the planet’s primary carbon capture systems.

Mangrove forests are considered a breeding ground for many marine and aquatic fish, shrimp, snails and crabs, and they also represent a suitable environment for the reproduction of seasonal and migratory birds. They also help eliminate liquid pollutants in the water, and protect the marine environment, by improving the quality of water which promotes the growth of different types of coral reefs.
