Berlin based gallery SOCIÉTÉ has announced a new chapter in the career of German artist Conny Maier, joining forces with Hauser & Wirth in a collaborative representation that positions Maier firmly on the international stage.

Conny Maier

Now living and working in Portugal, Maier’s practice is shaped by the tension between two distinct geographies. Her work forges visceral connections between landscape, climate, and human psychology, unfolding through scenes that merge geological pressure with instinctual and emotional forces. Across painting and sculpture, her worlds feel at once vivid and unsettled, saturated with colour, symbolic intensity, and a sense of latent unease.

Maier has gained growing international attention for her bold, assertive visual language. Her paintings are populated by misshapen figures, interspecies entanglements, and recurring motifs including animals, flowers, offerings, and ritual objects. These elements function as emotional anchors, grounding works that explore the fragile equilibrium between humanity and the natural systems it attempts to shape and control.

While her landscapes often appear lush and paradisiacal, they are charged with psychological tension. Paradise, in Maier’s hands, is never neutral. It is unstable, contested, and reflective of contemporary ecological realities where human intention and environmental consequence are increasingly entangled. Her graphic precision and narrative instinct lend the works a heightened awareness of the patterns that emerge when natural and constructed orders collide.

Marc Payot, President of Hauser & Wirth, describes Maier’s work as both raw and poetic, situating her practice within a lineage that spans artists such as Maria Lassnig and Erna Rosenstein, while also resonating with a younger generation including Angel Otero and Firelei Báez. He notes the gallery’s anticipation in sharing Maier’s expanding universe with new audiences worldwide, including a forthcoming solo presentation of her latest paintings in Los Angeles.

For SOCIÉTÉ, the collaboration marks a natural evolution in its long term relationship with the artist. Founder and CEO Daniel Wichelhaus reflects on the partnership as the continuation of a journey shaped by trust, experimentation, and momentum, expressing excitement at shaping the next phase of Maier’s career alongside Hauser & Wirth.

This joint representation signals a significant moment for Conny Maier, aligning her singular, psychologically charged vision with two galleries deeply invested in long term artistic development. As her practice continues to evolve across mediums and geographies, Maier’s work stands as a compelling reflection on the systems we inherit, the environments we alter, and the forces that resist our control.
