HM Visits: The Beech House, Amersham

The Beech House in Amersham is part of the rapidly grown Oakman Inn's brand. We will be teaming up with Oakman Inns to bring you reviews of their establishments around the country.

At very short noticed they guys at The Beech House in Amersham managed to fit us in on a Friday evening which is always very impressive for such a popular venue. On Arrival were greeted by the general manager who was welcoming everybody warmly as they entered, he'd then take them to their seats. First thoughts of the venue is that its a very chilled vibe, up market but chilled. We were seated and promptly asked if we'd like to order drinks whilst being given the menus.

Fast forwarding to our starters, which came quickly considering how busy it was, the food was amazing, between us we has the mozzarella dough balls (on the specials) and the bruschetta both tasting exquisite. The dough balls came in a sizzling pan with a tomato dip and the Bruschetta was very elegantly place on the plate. We then both decided to have the Beef burger which again we could hardly fault, perfectly cooked amazing bun, the chips and sweet potato fires accompanied the meal perfectly not greasy at all incredible main overall.

Now for me the desserts are the things I look at when ordering my starter by this time i found it difficult, such a wide selection, which is always a worry because either its a pre-made job or they could taste very cheap, the guys at The Beech House showed us that it was neither of them two, we ordered the banoffee sundae and it was divine again no faults.

Now when you go out dining whether its a quick meal or if its an family evening out or even a meal out with friends id say the food is about 70% of the night the other 30% is made up from the surrounding i.e. the venue and the staff serving you. What was brilliant to see here was that these guys managed to complete the evening with 100% the staff were fantastic very attentive but not over staying their welcome. once we'd finished our meal the general manager who we had been informed had just even there for 4 days was very professional, he came over to us to see how the meal went, we spoke about the menu and the options and what we had and then he even offered to show us around the venue, which after doing show just confirmed to me how wonderful this restaurant actually is. Even just after a few days the guy new so much about it just shows how committed he is to his role.

More details on 'The Beech House Amersham':

The 140-seat bar and restaurant is an innovative re-development of a row of shops and a former motor service station by award-winning pub group, Oakman Inns. www.oakmaninns.co.uk

Within easy walking distance from Amersham Station, the first thing you notice from Hill Avenue is an open-air terracewith al fresco-style seating in front of the glass-fronted bar area, which will doubtless prove a big attraction in warmer weather when shoppers and locals will watch the world go by over a drink.

The imaginatively designed interior offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere and is made up of several different areas - some quiet and discreet and others to suit larger parties. The gleaming aluminium-topped bar wraps around one side of the large space, almost guiding you to the choice of lounge and dining areas and then on to a raised mezzanine level with more seating and a private dining room, which can be booked for meetings and special events.

The original, warehouse-high, ceilings have been retained as have the original concrete supporting pillars. The industrial feel from the raw materials, brick, steel and glimpses of concrete mingle with a suspended ceiling “raft” of wood fibre panels that run above the key public areas - a system which creates an acoustically quieter environment by absorbing sound.

The bar is well stocked with an extensive range of hot and cold drinks to suit every occasion – from hot chocolate made with Callebaut shavings and Rainforest Alliance certified coffee prepared by their Baristas to cocktails, wines, beers and smoothies. Installed next to the bar are four striking copper tanks, each containing over 1,000 pints of craft beer delivered fresh from Greenwich – unexposed to the air - from the popular Meantime Brewery.

From breakfast through the day late, the seasonal, Mediterranean-inspired menu flexes through the day and children are welcomed with their own menu as well as an activity pack. Chefs can be seen by guests preparing dishes in their open, theatre-style kitchen. They are proud of their authentic Neapolitan pizzas, meticulously hand-crafted with Italian ingredients by one of their craft-trained pizzaioli in the wood-fired oven. They prepare all their dishes (which include an impressive range of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free choices plus daily specials and ‘home comforts’) with fresh sustainably-sourced ingredients and many of the dishes including their outstanding British meats, fish and vegetables are grilled in the Josper charcoal grill.
