Behind every great career is a story of quiet determination and relentless curiosity. For Dr Anna Chacon, those qualities have turned her into one of dermatology’s most recognisable forces, a clinician, innovator and advocate whose work spans continents and cultures. Yet beyond the titles and telemedicine breakthroughs, there is a woman who values simplicity, balance and connection. Whether she is caring for patients across the United States, teaching, or walking her two pugs, Sushi and Cruiser, Dr Chacon lives by a philosophy rooted in empathy and authenticity.

In this final feature of Hinton Magazine’s four part interview series, Dr Chacon opens up about life beyond the screens and clinics, from the lessons her father taught her to the challenges that shaped her resilience. It offers a rare glimpse into the person behind the professional, revealing how passion and purpose intertwine in the making of a true modern pioneer.

Dr Anna Chacon

You’ve been called the “Dermatology Dynamo” — but if you strip away the titles, how do you describe yourself when you’re off duty?

When I’m off duty, I see myself as someone who is curious, compassionate, and always eager to learn. I value time with family and friends, love exploring new cultures and cuisines, and am a devoted dog mom to my two pugs. I try to stay grounded in the simple joys of life and appreciate the moments that bring balance and perspective.

Your father’s work as a critical care physician inspired you early on. What lessons from him still echo in your day-to-day practice?

My father’s dedication, empathy, and ability to remain calm in challenging situations are qualities I strive to bring into my own practice. He taught me the importance of listening to patients, treating each individual with respect, and always leading with kindness—lessons that continue to guide me every day.

You speak five languages and work with patients across countless backgrounds. How has this shaped your understanding of connection beyond medicine?

Working with patients from diverse backgrounds and speaking multiple languages has shown me that true connection goes far beyond words. It’s about empathy, understanding, and meeting people where they are. This perspective has enriched my approach to patient care and deepened my appreciation for the many ways we can connect as humans.

Running both a teledermatology network and a Miami clinic sounds intense. What does a “normal” day in your life actually look like?

A typical day is dynamic and varied. I usually start early with teledermatology consults, followed by in-person clinic hours in Miami. My day often includes reviewing cases from other states, teaching, and research. Amidst the busy schedule, I always make time for my pugs, Sushi and Cruiser, who help me stay grounded and remind me to enjoy the present moment.

Your pugs, Sushi and Cruiser, often make an appearance in your story. What role do they play in grounding you amidst such a demanding career?

Sushi and Cruiser are my constant companions and a source of joy. They remind me to pause, play, and appreciate the present. No matter how hectic my day gets, spending time with them helps me reset and maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Behind every polished professional is usually a handful of challenges. What’s been your hardest lesson in building your career, and how did you move through it?

One of the hardest lessons has been learning to accept imperfection and embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. Early on, I felt pressure to have all the answers, but I’ve learned that adaptability and seeking support are essential for both personal and professional development.

Do you feel pressure being seen as a trailblazer, or does it energise you to push boundaries further?

Being seen as a trailblazer is both motivating and humbling. While there is some pressure, I am energized by the opportunity to innovate and improve access to care. I’m inspired by the trust my patients and colleagues place in me, and it drives me to keep pushing boundaries.

If you could give one piece of advice to your younger self — the Anna just beginning medical school — what would you say?

I would tell my younger self to trust her instincts, be open to new experiences, and not be afraid to take the unconventional path. Every challenge will help shape you into a more compassionate and resilient physician.

Dr Anna Chacon’s journey is a masterclass in balance, a reminder that drive and compassion can exist together. In this concluding feature, she reflects on the human side of medicine, her multicultural upbringing, and the grounding joy found in life’s simplest moments. From building one of the most accessible dermatology networks in the United States to finding peace in time spent with her pugs, she embodies a philosophy that success means nothing without connection. As this series closes, Dr Chacon leaves us with a lasting message that greatness is not found in constant motion but in the grace to pause, reflect and keep learning.
