Six private islands for a self isolated summer costing way less than the average London home

As the world prepares to reopen for travel, research by homebuying platform, Yes Homebuyers, has highlighted six secluded islands currently listed for sale, that could be yours for a very social distanced summer retreat and all for substantially lower than the cost of a house in London.

We’ve contacted Private Islands Online who are happy to have their images used as long as they are credited. They don’t have a great deal of high-res imagery, but they did provide the below Dropbox links for some of the islands included: -

Property prices in the UK aren’t cheap at an average of £250,000, especially if you’re looking to buy in the capital where this cost climbs to a huge £496,269.

Yes Homebuyers looked at where this money could be better spent and found six islands from Nova Scotia to Nicaragua, offering a chunk of island life spanning 0.3 to 12 acres and all for £340,000 or less.

Big Tancook Island, Nova Scotia - £48,947

Big Tancook Island is actually on the market as an island parcel, meaning you can purchase part of the island for a family compound, hotel or camp site. At 11.6 acres, it’s still the biggest and most affordable offering on the list and comes with 125 friendly year-round residents.

Danhattan and Majestic Island, USA - £226,393 to £236,455

If island life needs to come with a warmer climate, then Danhatten Island in Connecticut is the next most affordable option. For less than the value of a house in the UK, you can pick up half an acre of wooded private island, fit with a cabin that sleeps eight and it even comes with its own boat.

Similarly, Majestic Island located in the outstanding Beaver Dam Lake in Wisconsin also offers a relaxed pace of lakeside life. The off-grid but full functional cottage and the acres of private island it sits within could be yours for just £236,455.

Boca and Iguana Islands, Nicaragua - £251,548 to £341,387

OK, you’re paying out for a private island so you want to go for the full Castaway feel. For basically the same price as the average UK house (£251,548), Boca Island in Nicaragua is the most affordable way to live the dream.

The price has been dropped owing to some repair work being needed, but the island comes with a two bedroom guest house, a caretakers house, an infinity pool, a cement pier and that all important sandy white beach.

Increase your budget to £341,387, however, and you can double your private island potential with the five-acre Iguana Island. This awesome island includes a three-bed, two-bathroom house, wrap-around porch, dining room, bar and living area, as well as staff accommodation. There’s also a boardwalk that stretches around the island and a 28-foot watchtower.

Isla Carabana Sol, Panama - £289,640

For about £50,000 less than Iguana Island, Panama’s Isla Carabana could be an option. The island comes complete with a sailboat mooring, speed boat garage and a property with two ready to move in, self contained apartments.

The island also has serious party potential with a raised deck complete with BBQ, hot tub, tiki hut, private sandy beach and a private clear water swimming lagoon.

But to avoid feeling too cut off, the island also offers great wifi and phone signal and is located just a short boat ride from a number of great restaurants.
