There was a time when a night out meant ordering a bottle of the house wine and committing to it until the final drop. Those days are fading fast. A new study from Coravin, the global leader in wine by the glass systems, has uncovered a dramatic shift in how we drink, revealing that the modern wine lover is more experimental, more discerning and more curious than ever before.

According to the research, more than half of those surveyed now drink wine by the glass more often than they did two years ago. The motivations vary by generation. For younger drinkers, the change is fuelled by curiosity and a desire to explore different flavours rather than settling on one bottle for the evening. For older generations, the move reflects a more balanced lifestyle and a mindful approach to drinking.

The Coravin Guide

Gen Z and Millennials are driving the exploration trend. Nearly half of Gen Z respondents said that ordering by the glass lets them try a wider range of wines, while forty per cent of Millennials enjoy matching different wines with each course. In contrast, Baby Boomers are embracing the format for its flexibility and health benefits, proving that this evolution in wine culture has cross generational appeal.

Quality, it seems, is at the heart of the change. One in four drinkers say they would happily pay more than twenty pounds for a single glass, and over a third regularly spend between sixteen and twenty. The days of playing it safe with the cheapest pour are behind us.

The research also highlights intriguing preferences. Red wine remains the most popular choice for a glass on its own, but sparkling and rose options are rapidly gaining ground with younger drinkers who prefer lighter, more vibrant styles.

This new mindset has inspired Coravin’s latest innovation, The Coravin Guide, a first of its kind digital resource dedicated entirely to the world of wine by the glass. Designed to connect people with exceptional lists around the globe, it celebrates the freedom to taste, explore and enjoy wine in any way you choose.

The Coravin Guide

Greg Lambrecht, the founder of Coravin, explains that this freedom is at the very heart of his invention. He believes wine should be about discovery, not restraint. Too often, he says, people miss out on extraordinary wines because opening a full bottle feels like a commitment. The Coravin Guide, launching globally, is set to change that.

The guide will feature curated lists and insights from leading sommeliers in some of the world’s most exciting dining destinations including London, Sydney, Melbourne, Milan, The Netherlands and California, with more cities to follow. Each venue shares Coravin’s philosophy that great wine should be savoured one glass at a time.

The Coravin Guide is available at guide.coravin.com, marking the beginning of a new chapter for wine drinkers everywhere, one that celebrates exploration, quality and the joy of freedom in every pour.
