Planning your Indian adventure

Visas and permits

US citizens require a visa to enter India, which can be obtained through an Indian embassy or consulate. If you’re going for less than 60 days, the e-Visa is a popular and convenient option.

Visits to certain restricted and protected areas, such as parts of the northeastern states, require you to have special permits in addition before traveling. Ensure all documents are in order before your departure to avoid any travel headaches.

When to visit

India's vast geography means the best time to visit can vary depending on your chosen destinations. Generally, the most comfortable time to explore the country is from October to March, when the weather is cooler and more pleasant. This period is ideal for visiting popular tourist spots like Rajasthan, Delhi, Agra and Kerala.

If you're planning to visit northern, mountainous regions such as Himachal Pradesh, the summer months from April to June are preferable because these areas are often very cold in the winter and vulnerable to heavy snowfall.

Most popular destinations and routes

You have the option of various incredible destinations and routes across India. Each offers something different, from sandy beaches and diverse wildlife to bustling cities and dramatic rivers.

The "Golden Triangle", covering Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur, is popular for first-time visitors. It offers a sensational glimpse into India's rich history and allows you to experience architectural wonders like the Taj Mahal and Amer Fort.

For more stillness and natural beauty, Kerala's backwaters and Goa's pristine beaches provide a tranquil, relaxing escape away from the busiest urban areas.

Essential tips for traveling in India

Transportation

With its vast size, traveling across India can be challenging. Domestic flights are the quickest and most convenient way to cover long distances. However, the country also has an extensive railway network, which is a favorite method of travel for those looking for a more unique and authentic experience.

For shorter distances, most city streets are lined with rickshaws and buses offering a cost-effective yet exhilarating experience. Ride-hailing apps like Uber and Ola are also widely available in major cities, offering a more comfortable way to get around.

Accommodation

From heritage hotels and royal palaces to modern five-star resorts, there’s a wide range of luxury accommodations available in India. Staying at a heritage property allows you to experience India’s regal past in grand style.

Boutique hotels and eco-resorts are becoming increasingly popular, offering personalized service in awe-inspiring surroundings.

When booking, it's wise to consider the location, especially in larger cities, where staying closer to attractions and local amenities can save you time and hassle during your stay.

Currency

The Indian Rupee (INR) is the country’s official currency. It's advisable to carry cash, especially when traveling to remote areas where card payments and ATMs are likely to be more scarce.

Major credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants and stores in the big cities, but many smaller establishments and vendors still rely on cash. Currency exchange services are commonly available at airports, banks and authorized exchange centers.
