There are few places in London where bratwurst and bier meet Belle Époque grandeur quite so effortlessly. Since opening its grand doors in 2015, German Gymnasium has become a landmark in King’s Cross — part dining destination, part cultural immersion — delivering hearty German fare with a distinctly stylish twist.

Now, as it raises a stein to ten successful years, the restaurant is going all out with a weeklong celebration inspired by Germany’s lesser-known but no less charming festival: Tänzelfest. Think of it as Oktoberfest’s spirited younger cousin — more kitsch, more colour, and perfectly timed for a London summer.

From Monday 7th to Sunday 13th July, German Gymnasium will transform into a festive slice of Bavaria. Staff will trade sleek uniforms for lederhosen and dirndls, and tabletops will don cheerful, traditional patterns. And yes, the Oompah band is booked — live, loud, and ready to soundtrack your Friday evening on the 11th with brass-fuelled flair.

But what’s a German celebration without food and drink? Executive Chef Alex Thiel has crafted a Tänzelfest Spezialitäten menu that’s big on tradition with just the right measure of modern refinement. Highlights include a crisp Sommer Schnitzel served with Caesar salad (anchovies and all), a delicately smoked trout with sharp lingonberries and horseradish, and a generous lamb shank with parsley spätzle and ratatouille — rustic comfort, elevated.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a proper German celebration without beer. From 11th to 13th July, the bar will be serving £5 pints of Warsteiner Pilsener — a crisp, refreshing lager that’s practically made for summer socials. It’s a rare chance to enjoy an authentic German pour in central London without the usual capital markup.

Whether you’re a diehard Deutschophile or simply in search of something different this July, the Tänzelfest celebration offers a playful, pitch-perfect escape — no passport required. With festive décor, serious food, a buzzing biergarten atmosphere, and that unmistakable German sense of Gemütlichkeit, German Gymnasium is putting on a birthday bash worth raising a glass to.

Prost to 10 years — and to the next chapter of one of London’s most distinctive dining experiences.
