For many individuals, taking a break from driving is a common occurrence. Whether that is due to travel, lifestyle changes, health, or other personal factors and circumstances – the reasons are plenty. Returning to the driver’s seat after a hiatus like that can be both exciting and challenging, especially when coming back after a longer period of several years of even decades. If you’re looking to get back into things, here are some tips to help ease the transition back into driving for you.

Most Importantly: Start Slow

If you’ve been away from driving for an extended, significant period, it’s advisable to start slowly – just as with everything you might be out of practice with. Begin with short trips to build confidence and reacquaint yourself with the feel of the road. Gradually increase the distance, as you become more comfortable behind the wheel again. It’s also important to refamiliarize yourself with the controls and features of your vehicle. Adjust the mirrors, check the seat position, and ensure you understand, how to operate essential functions. Parking can be a source of anxiety for many drivers – so spending some time practising this in empty lots or less crowded areas will imprive4 your spatial awareness and manoeuvring skills, too. These seemingly simple steps can already significantly boost your confidence – and make the following driving experience more comfortable.

Choose the Right Times & Routes

When you get back into things, try to choose low-traffic times first. This allows you to ease back into the flow of traffic, without feeling overwhelmed or pressured by other users of the road. Early morning or mid-afternoons during weekdays are often quieter periods on the roads. Additionally, being mindful of low traffic hours can be advantageous, as the reduced risk of congestion means a lower likelihood of stressful situations. Remember that any potential incidents during your return to driving will be covered by car insurance, providing another added layer of reassurance for you.

It also helps if you start by driving on familiar routes that you used to frequent. This helps you to focus on the act of driving itself rather than having to navigate unfamiliar terrain on top of that or being distracted by smartphones or loud music. And as soon as you gain confidence again, gradually explore new areas and routes.

Consider Refresher Courses & Other Support

Chances are, that road rules and regulations may have chanced since your last time behind the wheel. Refresh your knowledge of the Highway Code and any recent updates to traffic laws. My now, there is a fantastic, Government official app you can use! Understanding current road rules enhances not only your safety and that of other road users, but also help you avoid potential pitfalls. But if you feel rustier than you’d like, enrolling in a refresher driving course can be immensely beneficial. These courses are specifically designed to update your skills, boost your confidence, and provide helpful tips for navigating modern roads.

It is normal to feel a bit apprehensive when returning to driving after a hiatus. Staying calm and positive and acknowledging that it may take some time to readjust it a great mindset to be in, when tackling it. Celebrate small successes and don’t hesitate to seek support. A trusted friend or family member will be happy to accompany you on your initial journey.
